Similarities and Comparison in the works of Mrs. Arpita Singh and Mr. Abir Karmakar.

by- Akash Aman.

Abir Karmakar and Arpita Singh are two very distinctive artists with versatile profiles, both born and brought up in West Bengal, completed their initial studies there and moved to M.S.U. Baroda , Gujrat, for their further resarch and studies in masters. These were some of the similarities in their respective journey, yet their thought processes and view of the world were distinctive from each other, almost complimentary to each other. Arpita Singh explores the vast canvas of rational thoughts, focusses on subjects like feminism, sicio-political scenarios, current events and how it affects the society and an individual. On the contrary Abir Karmakar shows his prime concerns about normal, mundane, daily life objects, scenarios and how an individual interacts with them consciously and subconsciously, his work also focuses upon the effects of migration on the mind and body of a person as well as on their surroundings. If we talk about the art making process and their respective ways to execute an idea we find them on the two opposite ends on the same line. They both incrporates human figures in their works but, Arpita Singh takes a very stylized approach on human figures with profile figures almost inspired from folk miniature art. Whereas, Abir Karmakar gives a more realistic approach to his human figures, his works shows an almost realistic and photographic approach, not exactly realism but somewhere around it.

Devi Pistol Waali is a fine example of how an idea is executed by Arpita Singh, where she depicts a current socio-political event to a mythological base.

And,

Retake a Holy Family by Abir Karmakar shows the depth of thought given to a realistic art peice and how he conveys his complex ideas through simple realistic ways.
