Surendra Nair’s and Arpana Caur’s works.
Arpana Caur and Surendra Nair are two versatile contemporary Indian artists. They both work in various mediums like watercolours, etching, oils, acrylics and mix media. But their subject treatment and idea execution are way different from each other. The first major distinguishing fact is that Arpana Caur is a self taught artist, contrary to that Surendra Nair is an academically trained artist. Which gets reflected in their execution of ideas and treatment of mediums. On studying Arpana Caur’s journey and experiences one can understand that her works are more influenced by the social issues and societal scenarios, and how an individual interacts with it,further how an individual resonates what they have absorbed from such surroundings, i.e. feminism, individualism, riots, conflicts (spiritual, mental and physical) can be observed in her works , like:
. Massacre of sikhs- 1984.
. Remembering Van Gogh- 1996.
. Between Dualities- 1997, and others.
Further talking about Surendra Nair’s journey, we see an academically trained artist who uses symbolism and hybrid figures/elements effortlessly to talk about how politics and societal values can be so vague in their meanings and that too in a very symbolic manner, when looking upon the artworks of Surendra Nair, one can not miss his satirical execution of hybrid forms and elements and their play. One can find all these satirical surreal figures in his works like:
. Two Owls- 2017.
. Alibis of the Cognates (series)- 2015.
. Pelican and Flamingo- 2016-2017, and others.
